Sector Overview
The insurance industry comprises 57 insurance companies, 24 in the life insurance sector while 33 are present in the non-life business. The life insurance sector recorded a new premium income of Rs 1.75 trillion in FY17, registering a growth of 26.2%. The size of the Indian non-life insurance sector is estimated to be Rs 1.28 trillion in terms of GDPI (gross direct premium income) as of 31st March 2017.
