ATA & UN TIR Carnet

Sector Overview
ATA Carnet is a universally accepted customs document issued in 78 countries including India, aims at facilitating temporary admission of goods into a member country without payment of normally applicable duties and taxes, including value-added taxes. Its operation is administered by World ATA Carnet Council (WATAC), ICC, Paris which governs the operation of the ATA Carnets in all participating 78 countries. It eliminates the need to purchase temporary import bonds. So long as the goods are re-exported within the allotted time frame, no duties or taxes are due. The acronym ATA is a combination of French and English phrases "Admission Temporaire/Temporary Admission."

TIR Carnet is an international transport document that allows transport of goods from the customs office of departure to the customs office of destination under the TIR procedure, defined by the TIR Convention. It is the universal customs transit system based on a UN Convention implemented at global level in Public-Private Partnership for moving goods across international borders without any additional checks. It is overseen by the United Nations Economic Commission (UNECE), and managed by the International Road Transport (IRU). TIR stands for “Transports Internationaux Routiers”.
