Indian Businesses perspectives to be under consideration at the upcoming G-20 Environment and Climate Sustainability Ministerial: Canadian Minister for Environment & Climate Change

NEW DELHI, 26 July 2023: The Hon. Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment & Climate Change, Government of Canada, today said, “As Canada and India work to meet climate targets and biodiversity goals and transform their energy grids, private sector business groups play a vital role in enabling these changes.”

Addressing an interactive Industry Roundtable organized by FICCI, jointly with the Canadian High Commission, Mr Guilbeault added that that Indian businesses’ perspectives will be under his consideration during his discussions at the upcoming G20 Environment and Climate Sustainability Ministerial .

Ms Catherine Stewart, Ambassador for Climate Change, Government of Canada said, “Canada is committed to bringing diverse perspectives into our climate action and net-zero plans. It was great to hear about the opportunities where this sector can and is making a difference such as reducing emissions from the cement industry, rethinking cooling and energy systems and implementing nature-based climate solutions.”

HE Mr Cameron MacKay, High Commissioner for Canada to India said, “Canada and India have a $125 billion economic partnership. It was a pleasure to join the discussion today and discuss the ways in which Canadian and Indian businesses are helping drive India’s green transition and growth in sectors such as renewable energy and clean technology.”

Mr Shailesh K Pathak, Secretary General, FICCI said that it is the opportune time for India and Canada to collaborate in clean technologies and climate action for net-zero development.

Mr Shankar Venkateswaran, Managing Partner - Sustainability Integration and Co-Founder, ECube Investment Advisors highlighted the huge potential for India and Canada to work together on the responsible business and sustainability agenda. He also said that the idea of setting up a Center of Excellence, one of the ideas that emerged from today’s deliberations, can be an excellent start.

The objective of the roundtable was to have a discussion on key issues and opportunities to strengthen the economic relationship between India and Canada in the clean tech and net zero sphere.
